Keauhou

At the south end of Alii Drive and a short distance from Historic Kailua Village, the Keauhou Resort area has emerged as one of the island of Hawaii’s hidden gems. The area is bordered on the north by beautiful Kahaluu Bay, and many of the coffee farms which produce the classic Kona coffee are just up the slopes of Hualalai volcano or a short drive south at Kealakekua.

Keauhou is blessed with sunny weather and perfect waters which made it a favorite hideaway of Hawaiian royalty, and today the area boasts diligently restored heiau (temples) and a wealth of historical sites.  The City of Refuge at Honaunau is not far from Keauhou. 

For the more modern Hawaiians, the Keauhou Shopping Center hosts several restaurants with various types of cuisine, along with grocery and drug stores, a movie theater and a medical clinic.  The Sheraton hotel is at the point of Keauhou Bay, and there are more restaurants along Alii Drive, with the Kona nightlife nearby.

Keauhou Bay hosts a variety of water sports, from snorkel boats, fishing charters and tour cruises to stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking.  Nearby beaches are destinations for surfers and snorkelers.  At night, the Keauhou area attracts manta rays that feed on microscopic plankton. To really see manta rays up close and personal, go on a snorkeling or diving excursion at night and swim with the rays.  If you prefer to stay on land, the Kona Country Club golf course is at Keauhou, and the area is great for jogging, bicycling and hiking.

Housing options at Keauhou range from luxury homes with impressive ocean views in the gated communities of Keauhou Estates and Bayview Estates, to luxury condominiums and very reasonably priced condominium projects with the full set of amenities including swimming pools, hot tubs, community areas and tennis courts.  Among the larger condominium projects are Keauhou Punahele, Country Club Villas, Kanaloa at Kona, Keauhou Palena and Surf and Racquet.
